Repeated use of antibiotics has led to the existence of resistant strains of bacteria, which are immune to the effects of multiple different antibiotics. This has been described as a "serious, worldwide threat to public health" by the WHO.
In 2013 the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that over 23,000 people died each year from antibiotic-resistant infections in the US. More recent data on their website suggests the figure is more like 37,000. I ask:
