As of 12 March 2021, he is charged with second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Chauvin's televised murder trial began on March 8, 2021, with opening statements anticipated on March 29. The trial is expected to last approximately four weeks. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
